Catholic Group Asks Cardinal To Boycott Kerry At BC's Commencement
BOSTON (CBS) - For the second year in a row, a Catholic group wants Cardinal Sean O'Malley to boycott Boston College's graduation.
The Catholic Action League is protesting Secretary of State John Kerry as the school's commencement speaker. It says Kerry supports anti-Catholic views including abortion rights and BC should not be honoring him.
"There are few American politicians that have compiled such an extensive record of opposition to Catholic moral teaching as John Kerry; Abortion, contraception, same sex marriage, embryonic stem cell research," C.J. Doyle of the Catholic Action League said.
Cardinal O'Malley withdrew from BC's graduation last year over the choice of Ireland's Prime Minister Enda Kenny as the commencement speaker. The cardinal said Kenny was promoting abortion legislation.
BC says it looks forward to secretary Kerry's speech on Monday.
"The Catholic League has no standing within the Catholic Church or in academe," university spokesman Jack Dunn said in a statement. "We look forward to having the Secretary of State share his insights on international issues with our graduating students on Monday."
