Cardinal Sean O'Malley Holds Christmas Service At Homeless Shelter
BOSTON (CBS) -- Cardinal Sean O'Malley delivered a message of hope on Christmas Day to the homeless at St. Francis House in downtown Boston.
The cardinal said one reason he went there to deliver his Christmas message was to also deliver a message to the public that there is a real need for more homeless services across the Commonwealth.
"Christmas is a time when we want to bring hope and a message of love and reconciliation, and the sense of responsibility to our community that we're here to take care of one another," O'Malley said.
He praised the workers at St. Francis House for picking up the slack after the closing of the Long Island Shelter, but said much more needs to be done to meet the needs of people who have no place to live
Malley holds a morning service at St. Francis House every Christmas.
"It makes Christmas real," O'Malley said. "So much of Christmas has turned into a sentimental, commercial glitzy celebration, but Christmas is about God making himself small and poor and homeless."
