SUV crashes into Carl's Cones ice cream shop in Gloucester
GLOUCESTER - An SUV crashed into Carl's Cones ice cream shop in Gloucester Friday. Surveillance video captures the SUV near the corner of Washington St. and Centennial Ave. in Gloucester before it abruptly speeds up and slams into a parked car then the vehicle jumps the curb and crashes through a building.
The sound was shocking to neighbors who witnessed the crash.
"When it hit, the whole building, the reverb shook our house," said neighbor Jacqueline Roulete.
Surveillance video captured the inside of Carl's Cones Ice Cream Shop as the SUV broke through the front door.
The Gloucester Fire Department says the driver of the SUV was rushed to a local hospital with injuries but is expected to be OK, something the family behind Carl's Cones is calling a miracle.
"Thank God no one was here, there's a picnic bench there are always kids there," says Rhonda Goulart whose son and daughter-in-law own the store. It typically opens at noon, but the opening was delayed because of rain.
"My daughter-in-law saw the weather this morning and it just came over her and texted the girls don't show up until two o'clock. We're glad we had a delayed opening at two o'clock because there was nobody in the store," says Goulart.
The crash is now forcing the family to close the shop doors after fighting to open in the middle of the pandemic.
"It was crazy, how could this happen? things were going so well," says Goulart.
Carl's Cones tells WBZ October 2023 will be the three-year anniversary of the shop and they plan on having a grand re-opening to celebrate.
