Vigil Held For Girl Killed On Cambridge Sidewalk

CAMBRIDGE (CBS) -- A candlelight vigil was held for Richelle Robinson, a 15-year-old girl who died after an apparent assault in Cambridge.

Richelle, a Cambridge Rindge and Latin student, was described by her family as "a very smart young lady, and very responsible."

"She was loved by many. She had future plans to become an Emergency Medical Technician. She would have celebrated her birthday 16th birthday in September," her family said in a statement. "She loved to dance and she loved makeup and getting her nails done."

A memorial was growing Wednesday afternoon near the spot where Richelle was attacked. Police said she was thrown to the ground on Cambridge Street at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition and passed away Monday afternoon.

"She was good. She was nice. She was a good friend," said Richelle's teenage friend dressed in purple for the vigil.

"It's fifteen years old, that's an early time, there was so much left that never came yet, so honestly it's something that we can remember her for because she lives in us," said another friend who showed up to walk with friends, relatives, and community members Wednesday.

They met at the Lechmere MBTA stop and walked about a mile to the spot where the incident happened.

Near the intersection of Cambridge and Marion Streets, police made up flyers for area businesses to display in windows. They ask for witnesses to come forward. Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan carefully called it "an apparent assault." She's been vague on details, saying only that the girl was thrown. Robinson died in a hospital bed Monday.

One of Richelle's teachers stopped by the Cambridge Street scene with a candle, emotional. "She was just a lovely bright light," she said. "She was incredibly intelligent. She was just amazing and I just don't get it. I just don't get it."
