Transformer Catches Fire At Fresh Pond Mall

CAMBRIDGE (CBS) – Smoke poured from the Fresh Pond Mall in Cambridge after a transformer caught fire and exploded early Saturday morning.

Residents and workers reported two loud explosions around 6:20 a.m. behind Whole Foods Market and TJ Maxx.

Firefighters had to shut down power and use foam to battle the blaze.

Firefighters had the situation under control by about 8:30 a.m.

No one was injured in the incident, fire officials say. Three vehicles parked nearby were damaged and then towed from the site.

Power was cut off to the mall due to the explosion and remained out as of about 9 a.m. The scene was cleared shortly before 10:30 a.m.
