Callahan Tunnel To Reopen In Time For Monday Morning Rush Hour

BOSTON (CBS) -- State officials have announced the Callahan Tunnel will reopen Monday at 5 a.m. in time for rush hour.

Final paving in the tunnel will be taking place over the weekend.

Drivers will see new pavement and curbs inside but the walls won't be done

The Callahan is a primary route to Logan International Airport and carries on average 30,000 cars a day.

The 52-year-old tunnel was shut down for renovations in December. One year earlier on Christmas Eve 2012, one of the tunnel's wall panels fell onto the road.

In the next few days MassDOT found hundreds of defective panels.

"Going forward there will be some overnight closures and some weekend work to put the final tunnel wall-lining up but we expect that to go without any problems," state highway administrator Frank DePaola said.

DePaola said that work should move ahead smoothly because the brackets for the wall panels are already up.

The March 10 opening is two days ahead of a March 12 deadline given to the tunnel contractor.

The good news for commuters is also good news for the contractor, who is supposed to get a $71,500 bonus for every day the work is completed before  deadline.
