Cat Rescued From Callahan Tunnel To Go Up For Adoption
JAMAICA PLAIN (CBS) -- A very lucky cat rescued from Boston's Callahan tunnel last week by a Massachusetts State Police trooper is healing and will soon be up for adoption.
Trooper James Richardson found the five-year-old cat lying by the side of the road in the tunnel on Tuesday, September 13. Callahan, as the cat's come to be called, had been hit by a car and was in great pain.
"I saw the cat injured and lying motionless inside the tunnel next to the road and it was clear he'd been struck by a car and needed help," Trooper Richardson said in an MSPCA release.
Richardson took the cat to the MSPCA-Angell facility in Jamaica Plain. There, veterinarians found that Callahan had several pelvic fractures and head trauma.
"It always amazes me that cats can survive these kinds of strikes," said the shelter's head veterinarian, Dr. Cindi Cox, in an MSPCA release.
Dr. Cox said Callahan's fractures aren't severe enough to require surgery, and should heal after six weeks of rest in a cage with a foster family.
At that point, as long as he's fully recovered, Callahan will be looking for a forever home.
According to the MSPCA, Callahan did not have a microchip or identification tags, and was not neutered. They aren't sure how he ended up in the tunnel.
"This is probably a cat who survived on hand-outs from kind people but who likely lived alone, without a home of his own," Alyssa Krieger, adoption center manager, said in the release.
The shelter praised Trooper Richardson's rescue efforts, and said Callahan is very friendly.
