Bruins Take Defenseman Mason Lohrei, Three Others On Day 2 Of 2020 NHL Draft

BOSTON (CBS) -- After sitting out the first round of the 2020 NHL Draft, the Boston Bruins had five picks to make on Wednesday afternoon. With their first selection, the Bruins added to their blue line.

Boston GM Don Sweeney and company got their afternoon started late in the second round, drafting defenseman Mason Lohrei with the 58th overall selection. Lohrei is a 19-year-old Wisconsin native who tallied 37 points (eight goals, 29 assists) for the Green Bay Ramblers in the USHL during the 2019-20 season.

The lefty is 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds. He was ranked No. 132 by NHL Central Scouting, so Sweeney must have seen something that he really liked about Lohrei during the pre-draft process.

With the team's second pick of the day, No. 89 overall in the third round, the Bruins drafted 19-year-old Trevor Kuntar, who is committed to Boston College next season. The 6-foot, 203-pound centerman from Williamsville, New York was a top-ten scorer in the USHL last season, scoring 25 goals and dishing out 28 assists in 44 games for the Youngstown Phantoms. He tallied 93 points (49 goals, 44 assists) in his three seasons with Youngstown.

In the fifth round at No. 151 overall, Boston drafted Mason Langenbrunner, the son of former NHL player Jamie Langenbrunner. The 6-foot-2 defenseman out of Eden Prairie High School in Minnesota finished his senior season with 19 points in 25 games. Langenbrunner is committed to Harvard.

With their final selection of the day -- 182nd overall -- Boston drafted Woburn native Riley Duran, a 6-foot-2 centerman who had 44 points in 27 games for Lawrence Academy last season. He'll next play with the Youngstown Phantoms and is committed to Providence next year.

Boston traded their final pick of the draft, a seventh round selection, to the Toronto Maple Leafs for a 2021 seventh round pick.

Boston did not have a first-round selection this year after trading it to Anaheim at the deadline as part of the Ondrej Kase trade.
