Brookline police searching for suspects after armed, masked home invasion

Brookline home invasion suspects captured on camera

BROOKLINE – Police are searching for two masked suspects who are believed to have fired a gun when they broke into a Brookline home early Tuesday morning.

Security footage shows a hooded, masked man walking towards a camera holding up a piece of duct tape. The screen then blurs, and the sound of the tape covering the camera can be heard.

"They're fully covered. They do appear to be looking for surveillance and attempting to avoid detection," said Brookline Police Dep. Supt. Paul Campbell.

It happened in a sprawling Brookline estate on Warren Street while the residents were asleep at around 2 a.m.

"It's unclear if this was a targeted attack or not," said Campbell. "There is some information to believe that this may have been something that was targeted, so it is possible that they were there scouting out the scene before this occurred."

Police say the two brothers who were home when it happened were attacked. In the scuffle, one went to the hospital with a scratch on his head. Police say a gun was fired, but no one was shot.

On Tuesday, police were looking for two men they say stole some things from the home. Police did not say what was stolen. Security cameras caught the men under a back deck and then moving around in the shadows on a second-floor balcony.

That part of the property runs alongside a popular walking trail. "It's typically a pretty quiet, a nice residential Boston neighborhood," said Claire Flemming, who lives in the area.

Another neighbor, John Businger, wonders what the thieves were after. "It's very strange. One wonders if they cased the joint," he said. "Was there any relationship between the parties? I don't know, but home invasions are not common in Brookline."
