Rash Of Burglaries Hits Brookline
BROOKLINE (CBS) -- Police are reminding residents to lock their doors and windows and recommending they leave their lights on at night after a string of break-ins occurred over the past week.
The six burglaries and one attempted burglary occurred on Waverly Street, Roberts Street, Greenough Circle, Davis Avenue, Sumner Road, and Highland Road.
"In this past week, we've had six residential house breaks," said Brookline Police Lieutenant Philip Harrington. "We don't know what's causing the spike."
Harrington said that last year at this time, there were four house breaks. This year, there have been 15.
In each of the cases from the last week, burglars forced entry on rear windows and doors during evening hours and took small items like jewelry and small electronics.
"What we're seeing is a lot of these breaks are occurring when the suspect is gaining access by cutting a screen and opening up a window," said Harrington.
Police suggest anyone going away have their mail collected, not leave papers piling up on their stoop, and try to make their house look lived-in.
The cases are still under investigation, with police saying they are similar but not necessarily connected. They asked anyone who notices anything or anyone suspicious on their property to call them.
