Brockton Child, 3, Struck And Killed By Car

BROCKTON (CBS) – A young child was hit by a car Friday afternoon in Brockton and died a short time later at an area hospital.

The family said the victim is Cassaino Modesto who was three years old.

Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz says the boy was struck by a car on Hervey Street at about 4:42 p.m. on Friday.

Modesto was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after the incident, Cruz said.

The driver of the involved car stopped and remained at the scene, Brockton police said.

Witnesses said the mother and her son had just left the hair salon. They were walking home on Hervey Street when the boy was hit. Witnesses said the driver of the silver BMW had turned from Main Street onto Hervey. They said he immediately stopped and was upset.

The mother, Sandra Barros, moved to the U.S. a year ago from Cape Verde. Family said she also has a 6-year old son who was not there at the time of the accident.

No charges are pending as of Friday night, though the incident remains under investigation by Massachusetts State Police and the Plymouth County District Attorney's office.
