Shootings In Boston Leave 2 Dead, 2 Injured Overnight

BOSTON (CBS) -- Two shootings in Boston neighborhoods overnight left two people dead and another two injured.

A double shooting in Brighton's Oak Square neighborhood left two men in their 20s dead.

Police were still at the double murder scene near Faneuil and Brackett Streets several hours after the 12:40 a.m. shooting on Saturday.

The shooting was a shock for people living in a neighborhood unaccustomed to violence.

"It's definitely not comforting, I think would be the best way to describe it," one man said. "Obviously you can't judge a whole area by one incident but you know, that being said, it's not something I ever expected to wake up to if that makes sense."

Alex Faye took saw police respond to the scene following the shooting.

"I just saw a lot of tape, a couple cops standing... someone who looked maybe like a detective walking around and then someone I think dusting for prints," he said.

Neighbors said they heard several shots.

One woman said she heard eight shots.

"Of course I am afraid," she said. "Everybody's afraid now, you know?"

Summertime Violence

Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said the fatal shootings occurred days before the 4th of July holiday, which historically has been a challenging time for Boston Police.

"Last year we had 15 people shot over the July 4th weekend in ten separate incidents," Evans said. "The year before we had two, the year before that we had nine, and over the years traditionally it's been a violent weekend."

Two people were also shot in Mattapan, at Morton and Norfolk Streets around 12:15 a.m. Saturday.

Police said both people shot have non-life threatening injuries.

No word on the identities of the victims or if any arrests have been made. Police have not released any more information.

At a public event, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh urged Boston residents to remain vigilant in their neighborhoods.

"We had a fairly quiet month of June that we're moving along here and then we had the shootings last night and two homicides. They're still under investigation," Walsh said. "We're asking people to just keep your eyes open and we're doing a lot of programming to try and prevent these shootings from happening."
