Local Brazilian Community Mourns Soccer Team Killed In Plane Crash
FRAMINGHAM (CBS) – There's an estimated 300,000 Brazilians living in Massachusetts, and many of them have settled in Framingham.
In the downtown area of the Metrowest town there are blocks of Brazilian owned businesses. On Tuesday, many of those store owners were tuned into Global TV, watching news reports of the soccer plane tragedy in Portuguese.
"They were loved by everyone in Brazil, everyone in the world." That is how one woman spoke about the members of the Chapecoense soccer team and others killed in the crash.
The owner of a cellphone store was on Facebook, watching her fellow Colombians change their profile pictures to the team logo with a ribbon on it.
At Brazilian radio station A Brasileira in Framingham, the show hosts asked listeners to pray. IIma Paixao, the station's General Manager, told WBZ "It's hard to put words to this tragedy."
She added, "Brazil is one big team when it comes to soccer. We have players and cheerleaders and we're all part of that team."
