Boston's Best Ways To Commemorate MLK Jr. Day

Martin Luther King, Jr. was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. He worked diligently to help others and create a better world, one full of peace. The City of Boston and the entire nation celebrates his life and legacy on MLK, Jr. Day, the third Monday in January every year. The next MLK, Jr Day celebration falls on Monday, Jan. 18. There are a variety of celebrations and festivities in and around the city to remember the work and efforts of this civil rights leader, who earned his Ph.D in Systematic Theology at Boston University and also attended Harvard University.

The Harlem Gospel Choir performs an annual tribute to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King. This lively concert takes place on the campus of Harvard University, where MLK, Jr. once attended classes. The annual celebration and show features music, dance and inspirational components that will leave the audience in awe. The attendees will leave the Joyful Noise Concert with a feeling of peace and hope.

This annual event is the nation's longest-running tribute dedicated to MLK, Jr. The speakers for the 2016 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Breakfast include Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healy, Dr. Ruth Simmons, President Emerita, Brown University and others. Amid the inspirational speeches, there is a delectable breakfast, live music and meaningful and diverse conversation among attendees.

The Museum of Fine Arts offers free admission all day on Jan. 18, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. There are inspirational and history-filled films, entertaining performances and arts and crafts activities planned throughout the day. The family art-making activity, family art walk and a story hour provide hours of entertainment for children. The MFA's Teen Arts Council presents music and dance performances during the Museum Of Fine Arts open house honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Faneuil Hall is a popular and historic stop along Boston's Freedom trail where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is honored with a special celebration at 1 p.m. on MLK Day. There is spectacular musical entertainment provided by the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra as they perform classical and spiritual selections, songs of freedom and end the concert with a sing-a-long. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service and Celebration Tribute Concert at Faneuil Hall is free to the public.

Dr. King attended Boston University from 1951 to 1955, and this educational institution still celebrates his life and devotion to civil rights every year on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The day's celebratory events include dramatic readings and informative talks that address social justice and civil rights for which MLK, Jr. was a leader and trailblazer.
