Boston's Best Outdoor Swimming Spots

Some of the most frequented and secret favorite spots of your neighbors are now being revealed for all of Boston residents to enjoy! Most New England colonists just hit the shoreline because there is plenty of it. Heading further inland, Massachusetts has plenty of secret lakes, shady waterfalls and picnic areas to boat, swim and spend the day. These are the best loved and most cherished family-sized water holes close to town.

Wrights Pond, Medford

Wright's Pond is situated just off the Route 93 at the Fellsway Exit, along the picturesque winding road that connects Spot Pond, and The Stone Zoo together. Opening each day at 10 a.m. there is a sticker and pass program for cars and visitors that make the trip on foot. There are a vast number of scenic paths to Wrights Pond through the woods, with boat ramps and forested areas perfect for a quick private dip to cool off. Parking is ample and able to be used along Route 20 if needed.

Arlington Lakes (Mystic), Winchester/Arlington

Arlington Pond is one of the largest lakes, considered to be one of the Mystic River Lakes in the Boston area. The Shannon Beach, located in what most would call the Mystic River Reservation, has been host to thousands of families over the years with rented cottages along the shore and plenty of sailing options. Freshwater swimming is one option for any time of day due to the easy waves and ready tree cover for most sunbathers who have a tendency for heat stroke.

Morrissey Beach (Morrissey Blvd.), Boston

Morrissey Beach is a well kept secret among the natives of Savin Hill. The landmark tanks along Quincy basin mark the turn off for Morrissey Blvd. Head toward the newest full feature playground to find changing room, public outhouse and walking path to the beach area. This is a direct ocean access that can be rocky and full of precious keep sakes along the shoreline. For a remarkably quiet ocean beach day, give it a try. The other option is to head closer into Southie to the larger and more popular spots for dipping, family parks and shade along Castle Island's entrance.

Billerica Beach (Rte. 20)

For the surprise dip after shopping at one of the largest malls in the area at Route 3 and Lowell Connectors, Route 20 has one of the easiest freshwater beach spots to cruise past. Unless you notice the Route 99 landmark as you go past. Billerica Beach isn't well known, nor is it a very large area. The focus is sand, safe swimming for children complete with float barriers and life guard post. The parking may be a problem but the idea of a surprise for the passengers in the back seat after a day of errands, just may be a perfect respite.

Breakheart Reservation, Melrose/Saugus

Breakheart Reservation has become a haven for dog walkers of the area. Did you know it was home to three stocked lakes? No, not two just two, three gorgeous lakes. Map it! And bring the dog, the bathing suit, a fishing rod for dad and the cooler. Easily located off Route 1, or take the direct route just outside of Melrose Center at Lincoln St. and Main St. The area is loaded with waterfalls, walking paths, and tricking rivers complete with forest creatures for the curious George who may tire of the water.
