Boston University police issue alert after burglaries during move-in week

BOSTON - Boston University freshman students are taking their first steps on campus with a sense of joy and excitement, but also concern. Over the weekend BU Police issued a warning to students after a string of break-ins on campus.

BU school officials sent a campus-wide email alerting students about a person entering into residences on Bay State Road through an open window on the ground level and stealing various items.

"Getting it the very first day was definitely a little bit worrying. I knew there might be some levels of crime or that kind of thing but didn't expect an email that quick. But I feel a little better since we're on a higher floor," BU freshman, Leo Schroeder said.

MIT Police also reported a person breaking into residence and stealing property.

"Hopefully there are no more break-ins that often. Because it's kind of worrisome the first day to get an email and there's been three break-ins already," BU freshman, Alfredo Tovar said.

BU Police are now asking students to be sure to lock their doors and windows and lock security screens.

BU junior Molly French lives on the first floor. "It said they reached in through the window. I did look at how many layers I have. This [window] is kind of locked from the inside. You have to open it from over here," French said.

BU police say the thieves are breaking-in during the early morning hours between the hours of 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. and targeting residences that are easily accessible.

"I actually got an extra key today to lock more things up. So I'm a little concerned, but I've gotten a lot of emails about them increasing the police for us around late hours, so it makes me feel more comfortable," BU student, Kara Stratton said.

The suspect has not yet been identified. Police are asking students if they see any suspicious behavior to report it immediately.
