Storm preparations underway in Boston for Tuesday's nor'easter

BOSTON - Mayor Michelle Wu has declared that a snow emergency will start in Boston at 10 p.m., and students will have a snow day as schools will be closed Tuesday due to a winter storm.

"Parking bans will be in effect on posted roadways and major arteries to ensure that we can keep streets clear of snow and available for emergency vehicles," Wu said.

"Stay off the roads" in Boston, mayor says

City buildings will be closed on Tuesday, Wu said, and she encouraged other employers in the city to let people work from home if possible.

"Please stay off the roads tomorrow," Wu said. "It's looking like it will come down pretty heavily, pretty fast."

The mayor said public works crews are ready with 38,000 tons of salt and 850 pieces of equipment ready to treat the roads.

Wu also reminded property owners to clear snow from sidewalks within three hours of the snow ending. Boston issued tens of thousands in fines after a snow storm in January.

Will space savers be allowed in Boston?

A snow emergency means space savers like traffic cones and chairs will be allowed for up to 48 hours after the emergency ends in Boston. After that they will be picked up as trash by the Department of Public Works.

Space savers are not allowed in the South End, where the neighborhood banned them.
