Boston Shootings Leave 1 Dead, 4 Injured

BOSTON (CBS) -- A Dorchester resident who did not want to be identified said he heard a number of gunshots early Saturday morning outside his home.

"It sounded like people shooting at each other. Two guns going back-and-forth with each other," he said.

The gun violence left one man dead and four others wounded.

"The shootings all happened at 2:30 a.m. and the events leading up to that morning parade," Commissioner Bill Evans said.

Police say there were three separate shootings all happening in the span of one hour on Blue Hill and Bowdoin avenues and Creston Street.

"It's hot outside. It's just how it is. Obviously, I'm tired of it, but I don't think too much of it now," the man said.

The shootings came in the morning hours before the annual Jouvert Parade in Boston, which has been marred by violence in the past.

"We need some more help from other elected officials to say we don't want that beginning (the) parade, but that's where the problems happen," Mayor Marty Walsh said.

Police did remove six guns off the street, and they said they put extra patrols out in anticipation for a violent night.

This is the city's 21st murder of the year.

Last year at this time there was more than 30 murders.

"Unfortunately we are going to be burying another person this year because of senseless tragedy and the amount of guns on the streets of our city," Evans said.
