Boston Residents Frustrated By Mountains Of Snow, Citizens Connect App
BOSTON (CBS) - The city of Boston is gearing up for another snowstorm, deploying a snow melter at another snow farm on Terminal Street in Charlestown.
"We can melt 135 tons per hour," said Dennis Cleary, supervisor for the New York City Sanitation Department. New York has loaned two melters and crews to help Boston manage snow after back to back storms.
The conditions are challenging even their expertise. "It's much bigger than New York City, but we'll work until it's done," said Cleary. Which seems to be the mantra in Boston these days.
The National Guard has also been deployed around the city piling on the piles of snow to clear walkways and make it easier and safer for pedestrians to maneuver. Specialist Patrick Humphrey says it can seem like pushing grains of sand, "but we're making progress."
For some, not enough progress in the city. Pictures sent to the Mayor's Citizens Connect show mountains of snow near South Station which Marianne DePamphilis says are a safety hazard. "We're right across from the ramp to the Expressway, there's traffic and buses coming in. When you step out you can't see," she tells WBZ-TV.
She received a case number for the city to investigate and then received a follow-up that the snow had been removed, when it hadn't been. "I'm frustrated because perhaps there isn't enough follow through going on."
A spokesperson for Mayor Marty Walsh says Citizens Connect has been experiencing technical issues with requests for snow removal, and some cases were incorrectly closed.
