Red Sox won't rush to find new leader of baseball operations
BOSTON - Nearly three weeks have passed since the Red Sox fired chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom. The efforts to find a new leader of baseball operations are underway, but the team is not in a particular rush to fill the vacancy.
Red Sox president Sam Kennedy and manager Alex Cora met with the media on Monday at Fenway Park, a day after a disappointing season came to an end. Kennedy said that the process this time around will be "much different" than when the team hired Bloom in 2019.
"We plan to take our time, we plan to be very deliberate. We're going to have internal candidates, we're going to have external candidates. We're going to have a consistent, robust process that hopefully leads us to the right person -- or people," Kennedy said. "We don't have any set deadline. We're going to go through this process this offseason, and we'll have an announcement when it's appropriate."
Kennedy said the team plans to hire someone who can get the Red Sox back to postseason contention while also maintaining a stable farm system.
"We should be playing right now, and that's the goal each and every year," he said. "We think it's possible to build and win."
And despite outside speculation, Cora reiterated that he will not be throwing his hat into the ring for a general manager position, instead remaining in the dugout.
"No, we talked about it last week. I was very honest with [the ownership group]. I'm not prepared to do that. I feel like the impact that I can make here in this organization in the upcoming years will be in the dugout. That's how I see it," Cora said. "It's not an easy job. Because you know baseball and you know how to talk baseball doesn't mean that you're prepared to run an organization."
