Boston Police Seize Nine Illegal Guns, Make Five Arrests In Less Than A Day

BOSTON (CBS) – Boston police seized nine illegal guns and arrested five people in a series of three incidents that occurred in a 15-hour window between Friday and Saturday.

Police pointed to stepped up patrols and an increased focus on areas and individuals believed to be involved in either drug- or gang-related activities.

"Reducing violence in our neighborhoods starts with taking illegal guns off of our streets," police Commissioner William Evans said. "And thanks to our officers and their efforts over the past 24 hours, there are nine fewer guns in the hands of individuals who have otherwise shown a complete and utter disregard for the safety of others and the quality of life in our neighborhoods."

On Friday morning at about 10:30, members of the Citywide Neighborhood Drug Control Unit responded to the corner of Thetford Avenue and Evans Street in Dorchester where they recovered four guns, a ballistic vest and ammunition from a backpack found inside a trash barrel.

About four hours later, officers from the same unit executed a search warrant in the area of 47 Topliff St. in Mattapan.

Police said their search uncovered two guns, a rifle and 15 plastic bags of marijuana.

Officers arrested Jesor Brown, 19, of Roslindale, James Edwards, 22, of Dorchester, and Jesus Gonzalez, 23, of Dorchester, on various firearm and drug charges.

At about 1:30 Saturday morning, officers assigned to the Youth Violence Strike Force stopped a car for motor vehicle violations in the area of Carmen and Radcliffe streets in Dorchester.

Police said their investigation of the incident led to finding two handguns.

The car's occupants, Lino Cook, 22, of Dorchester, and Rickie Thompson, 29, of Mattapan, were arrested on various motor vehicle violations, warrants, and firearms charges, police said.
