Boston Police Shoot, Kill Dorchester Suspect

BOSTON (CBS) – Police shot and killed a suspect outside a Dorchester home where two other people had also been shot.

Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said that officers were called to a home on Devon Street where two people were shot and injured.

When police arrived, they found two people in the middle of nearby Laredo Street. Evans said one of the men had been shot in the initial incident and it appeared the two suspects were limping to a waiting car.

One of the men pointed his gun at police, Evans said. Officers ordered him multiple times to drop his weapon.

Police say the man did not comply, there was an exchange of gunfire and the man was killed.

"Nobody takes joy in what happened today but when we're confronted with a deadly threat there's nothing else we can do," Evans said.

No officers were injured during the exchange of gunfire. Evans said several officers went to local hospitals to be checked out due to the stress of the situation.

Boston Police have not identified the suspects or officers involved in the incident.

The man shot and killed is known to police.

At least one firearm was recovered from the area, which is near the Roxbury line.

Evans said his officers responded appropriately to the incident.

"They put their lives on the line every day," Evans said. "We're very fortunate with the exchange of gunfire that none of our officers were injured."

Rev. Eugene Rivers, a Dorchester pastor, spoke to reporters at the scene of the shooting.

Rivers said he wanted to assure the community that there was no misconduct by the responding officers.
