Officers Shoot, Kill 19-Year-Old Who Opened Fire In Dorchester
BOSTON (CBS) – Boston Police officers shot and killed a 19-year-old man who opened fire on them in Dorchester on Monday.
Officers in the bicycle unit were responding to a shooting between two men on Geneva Avenue when they spotted one of the suspects running with a gun in his hand. That chase ended along nearby Penhallow Street where officers ditched their bikes.
The officers issued several verbal commands for the suspect to drop the gun. "According to several witnesses, the suspect then pointed the firearm at the officers, and discharged the firearm at the Boston Police officers," BPD Commissioner William Gross said Monday night. "These officers were in uniform with their badge clearly displayed."
The officers returned fire, and struck the suspect, who has not been identified. Gross said the officers immediately rendered first aid. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Boston EMS.
A bystander told WBZ he heard 8-10 gunshots and then saw several kids running down Melville Avenue.
"I just heard gunshots. I thought they were fireworks, when I first heard them, but they were a little too fast and too loud to be fireworks," the witness said. "I saw kids running after the gunshots were fired."
The officers were taken to the hospital to be evaluated.
Officers are still searching for a second person involved.
Gross said some of the officers who responded to the shooting were wearing body cameras. The shooting is being investigated by the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.
