Boston Police Arrest Man With Elaborate Replica Gun

BOSTON (CBS) - Carrying a replica gun in Boston is illegal, and police say a recent arrest shows why.

On Monday, police arrested a 20-year-old man in Dorchester who was carrying a replica firearm. Police say the gun looked so realistic officers could have easily mistaken the fake weapon for a real one.

Police arrested Damien Davis, of Boston, on Monday afternoon after police say Davis ditched a stolen motor scooter and led officers on a foot chase.

Davis is charged with receiving stolen property and trespassing, and has two outstanding warrants. Police confiscated the fake gun, which one responding officer said looked very real.

"Thankfully, this kid never pointed this gun at any of our officers because, if he had, this could've gone real bad," one unnamed responding officer said in a Boston Police news release.

City officials banned fake guns in 2015, following the shooting death of 12-year-old Tamir Rice in Cleveland, who police said was holding a fake gun when they fired at him.

Officers in Monday's arrest said they were amazed at not only how real the fake gun looked, but how realistically it felt and functioned.
