'Backlash' Against Islamic Community Not Tolerated, Boston Police Commissioner Says

BOSTON (CBS) – Police Commissioner William Evans spoke to the Boston Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center on Friday, vowing to protect members of the Islam community from potential "backlash" after recent terrorist attacks around the globe.

Evans' remarks came the same day that the FBI announced it is investigating the mass shooting in San Bernardino, Calif., as a terrorist act committed by a Muslim couple that may have self-radicalized.

"There's been some tragedy in this country, yesterday in California, in Paris, and other places," Evans said. "We're very much aware of the possible backlash against the Islamic community. I just want to let you know that we won't tolerate that. And we'll work closely with you to make sure that doesn't happen."

Evans was among several speakers who took part in the interfaith event at the Boston Islamic Society.

"We're here for you, but you also have to be here for us. We're all in this together to make sure this city is safe, our country is safe, and we all work together so nobody out there is getting hurt," said Evans.
