Boston Marathon Forecast: Absolutely Terrific Weather

BOSTON (CBS) - An absolutely terrific forecast for Marathon Monday, whether you're running or spectating it doesn't get much better than this.

This is truly a case of perfect timing in the atmosphere. A large area of high pressure will settle over New England Sunday and slide just offshore Monday. This will block one storm off the southeast coast and another over the Great Lakes from getting anywhere near our area.

There will be abundant sunshine, light winds and mild temperatures. A perfect forecast for spectators and likely just shy of perfect for runners.  Temperatures will be a tad warmer than some would like, topping out in the mid 60's. The winds will be light out of the south-southwest, a very slight cross wind coming from the runners right side at times.

Finally, there is a slight risk that a sea breeze will develop in the afternoon in Boston. I do not think this will be much of a factor for runners. If it develops, it will be feeble, penetrating only a mile or two inland from the coast, literally just about to the finish line.

And now, a breakdown through the day and along the course.

Sunrise in Hopkinton

Skies will be clear and temperatures will be cool early in the morning, 30-to-35 degrees with very little wind

9 a.m. in Hopkinton

Race time! The first wave about to head off on their journey. Very pleasant, sunny skies, temperatures rising into the 40's, light southwest breeze.

11 a.m. in Hopkinton

As the last wave of runners prepares for departure, there will be no weather issues.  In fact, conditions will be just about ideal, just a tad on the warm side. Sunny and calm, temperatures in the mid to upper 50's. Winds will be light, 5-to-10 mph out of the south-southwest.

The same conditions will exist in Boston at 11 a.m., as the Red Sox get underway at Fenway Park.  You couldn't pick a better day to be at the ball park!

1 p.m. on the course

Lots of sunshine, perhaps some high, wispy clouds filtering the sunshine just a bit. Temperatures from Framingham through Wellesley will be mild, ticking a degree or two higher each hour and now reaching 60-to-65. South-southwest winds continue 5-to-10 mph. Closer to Boston, a light sea breeze (5-to-10 mph) may develop, knocking temperatures down a tad right near the finish line.

3 p.m. on the course

Lots of runners coming down Boylston Street at this hour.

This is just about the peak of the day for heat and temperatures will average right around 65 degrees. Again, for the last mile or so of the course, runners may get just a slight ocean breeze. I doubt anyone would complain if temperatures fall from 65 to 55 down the home stretch!

Enjoy the day!
