Boston College Student Hit By Commuter Rail Train In Newton

NEWTON (CBS) -- A Boston College student was hit by an Commuter Rail trail in Newton on Friday morning, the school confirmed. The woman, 20-year-old Ariel Cox, was rushed to a Boston hospital with serious injuries.

Transit police were called to the West Newton MBTA station around 10 a.m. They said Cox was allegedly "trespassing on the right of way" and was hit by an inbound train. No foul play is suspected.

"I ask for your thoughts and prayers for BC sophomore Ariel Cox who was critically injured this morning when she was struck by a train in West Newton," Joy Moore Boston College vice president, student affairs said in a statement. "She is in the hospital, surrounded by her family."

Moore said Ariel Cox is from Newton and is the daughter of Boston College economics professor Donald Cox.

The investigation delayed trains in both directions on the Worcester/Framingham line. The 8:50 a.m. train from Worcester was over an hour behind schedule.

"There was a woman yelling 'Emergency, emergency, emergency;'" said witness Kim Childress. "They made an announcement over the train saying there was a medical emergency and that we were gonna be stopped for a while."

Childress said she and others had to get off the train and wait for buses.

The MBTA said they began operating an extra train between West Newton and South Station to help alleviate the delay.

Normal service had returned to the station by 5 p.m. Friday.
