Boat Runs Aground In Beverly With Dead Man On Board
BEVERLY (CBS) – A man was found dead inside a boat that ran aground in Beverly.
A Beverly Police officer was at a park near Lynch Pond on Ober Street on Friday afternoon when he saw a boat run aground.
Around 1:30 p.m, a 32-foot sailboat from Salem hit the rocks.
Lifeguards went out to the boat and found the man dead on board.
Police say there was only one elderly man on board the boat named "Etoile," and when they approached the boat it was clear that the man was dead.
"I feel really sorry for whoever he is," said witness Jessica Edwards.
She was at the scene early enough to see the captain's body still lying on the deck.
The boat remained offshore by about 4 p.m. because the tide is going out and the boat is on an unsteady area.
Officers have not yet been able to see any boat numbers to identify the man.
Investigators said the elderly man may have died from natural causes. Medical examiners have removed the body and will perform an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
The Essex District Attorney's office is in charge of the investigation.
