Gloucester Firefighters Battle 3rd Fire In Less Than A Day
GLOUCESTER (CBS) -- For the third time in less than 24 hours, Gloucester firefighters were tasked with battling a blaze in frigid conditions in the city.
Firefighters responded to a heavy fire that ripped through a Nashua Avenue home Monday morning.
Despite receiving calls that people were trapped inside the house, fire officials say no one was hurt and everyone was accounted for.
The fire was knocked down by firefighters, who remained on seen to check for hot spots. DPW sanders were called in due to hazardous conditions caused by ice.
Gloucester Fire Chief Eric Smith says the ice was one of the biggest challenges in fighting fires in cold weather.
"Guys get into the building and they go up the stairs, and they're not too bad to start with," he said. "Now, they've gotten them all wet on their way out, they're all slippery, (and) it just becomes a hazard for my people."
Smith said the two other fires were caused by overtaxed heating systems.
The cause of the Nashua Avenue blaze remains under investigation. The home was a total loss.
