Billerica's Tom Glavine Humbled By Call To Hall Of Fame
BOSTON (CBS) -- Billerica native Tom Glavine was one of three players elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame on Wednesday, and the 300-game winner celebrated in style.
Glavine, who won 305 games and was a two-time Cy Young winner over his 22-year MLB career, tweeted out the following shortly after hearing the news:
"Humbled by my HOF selection, congrats to Greg Maddux and Frank Thomas as well, honored to go in with you guys"
Glavine's wife Christine also tweeted out a couple pictures of Glavine's special moment. She tweeted a picture of him getting the phone call from the Hall of Fame committee, and then a picture of a bottle of champagne that was given to him by former Braves manager Bobby Cox after Glavine earned his 300th victory.
Glavine, 47, grew up in Billerica where he is a member of the high school hall of fame. He was drafted into the NHL by the Los Angeles Kings, but chose to play baseball instead after being taken by the Braves in the second round of the 1984 amateur draft. The lefty went on to pitch 17 seasons in Atlanta, spending five more with the New York Mets.
Glavine finished his career with a record of 305-203 and a 3.54 ERA. He was a 20-game winner five times in his career, and was named the MVP of the 1995 World Series.
Greg Maddux and Frank Thomas were also elected into the Hall of Fame on Wednesday.
