Billerica Selectman Asked To Resign After Painting Crosswalks

BILLERICA (CBS) -- A Billerica selectman has been asked to resign after he painted green-and-white crosswalks without the town's permission.

The town's DPW was power washing the paint off the roads on Sunday. They say the painting was unauthorized, adding that the Selectman George Simolaris defaced town property.

Simolaris, a professional painter, told WBZ-TV's Kate Merrill he was tired of waiting for the town to paint the crosswalks. He says he has been waiting for the town to paint them since November 2014.

"I thought that they would see the way that this would look and they would want to carry this on for the rest of the town," he told WBZ. "I just tried to use it as an example, and also how to do something for the safety of the people who are crossing because who knows when it would be painted."

The board has requested his resignation.

Simolaris will have to pay for the overtime detail for the cleanup.

He may also face charges.

Police are investigating the incident.
