Bergeron: Once You're In Playoffs Anything Can Happen
BOSTON (CBS) - 98.5 The Sports Hub's Andy Gresh and Scott Zolak were joined Tuesday afternoon by Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron at the brand new Sports Hub studio inside the TD Garden Pro Shop.
"Things didn't go the way you wanted to against Montreal," Zolak said of the team's season sweep at the hands of the Habs.
"No, not at all. Definitely a tough loss [Sunday night], especially against a big rival like Montreal. You never want that to happen," said Bergeron. "We got away from our game, and we got away from making it hard on [Carey] Price. He's definitely a good goalie, so when you do that it's going to be tough to win."
Gresh was curious to hear Bergeron's opinion if the Bruins struggles against their rivals are more physical or mental. In the regular season alone, the Bruins have dropped 11 of their last 12 games to the Canadiens.
"After losing four games this year you try not to say it's mental, but at the same time you've got to find ways to get yourself going and get yourself on the winning side of them. It's definitely not acceptable against a big rival like them, but also it's huge points that you let slip by," Bergeron told Gresh & Zo. "If you're trying to catch them [in the standings], it's tough to do when you give them two [points] like that."
In the 2013-14 season, the Bruins were wire-to-wire the best hockey club in the NHL, ending the regular season with the league's best record and Presidents' Trophy.
The Bruins are playing a much better brand of hockey now than they were in the beginning of the year, but are currently the Eastern Conference's eighth seed and just six points ahead of Florida in the standings.
"Do you sit there as veterans and say, 'Guys, we just need to get in [the playoffs] and get hot at the right time?'" Zolak asked.
"Yeah, for sure. Last year we had a great regular season and we got into the playoffs and didn't play our best hockey. It wasn't at the right time. Over the years I think I've seen it a lot of times. I think L.A., their first Stanley Cup, I think they finished eighth and they went all the way in and won the whole thing," said Bergeron. "So I think it's about feeling good and just getting in, and give yourself a chance. When you're in there you got to battle and anything can happen."
