Frigid temperatures stay below freezing in Boston area through the weekend

Next Weather: WBZ weather forecast

BOSTON - We are not likely to rise above the freezing mark across Massachusetts until Monday.

Friday will have a similar feel to Thursday with lots of clouds and highs generally near or slightly below 30 degrees.

There will be a storm system scooting to our south. This will bring several inches of snow to areas in the Mid-Atlantic (Pittsburgh, Philly, New York City etc.). Boston will be on the northern fringe of the event. Most of our area will just see some scattered snow showers during the day Friday.

North of the Massachusetts Turnpike, cold, dry air will likely win out for most of the day, meaning very little, if any, snowfall.

Over Cape Cod, the Islands and the Plymouth County coastline, there MAY be a coating to a few inches. All in all, a minor event by New England standards.

How cold will it get?

The bigger story for most folks in the area remains the cold. Again, nothing all that impressive given it is mid-January, however, we do have a frigid weekend coming.

The cold bottoms out Saturday. Highs will stay in the teens in many suburbs during the day. Low temperatures will largely be in the single digits Saturday and Sunday morning. Thankfully, the winds won't be all that strong, so wind chill values will only be 5 or 10 degrees lower than actual air temperatures.

What's next?

Temperatures will moderate next week but we may be in for more "hijinks." Watching the midweek timeframe for our next potential storm. Even though we will have a milder airmass in place, we still may have to deal with some snow or wintry mix late Tuesday or Wednesday.
