Woman Hit By Van In Belmont Crosswalk In Critical Condition
BELMONT (CBS) - A woman's shoes and belongings were strewn all over the street after a pedestrian crash in Belmont on Tuesday.
Police say a 39-year-old woman walking in the crosswalk at Lexington and Sycamore streets about 8:30 a.m. was critically injured after she was hit by a van.
"The lady laid out on the floor and a bunch of first responders were talking to her making sure she was breathing and trying to keep her alive," witness Michael Mikaelkallin said.
Investigators say the van had been turning onto Lexington street from Sycamore street when it struck the woman.
The owner of the van told WBZ-TV that her friend borrowed the vehicle to run an errand. She said he called her after the accident and he was "very shaken up."
Police say the driver did stop and is cooperating and they say he was not impaired.
Neighbors who live around the area say this is a very dangerous intersection and it's not the first accident they've seen.
"I'm very cautious there and that street has always been labeled the danger street," Belmont resident Isabella Maldarelli said.
The intersection does have flashing yellow lights and a speed bump.
"I would like to see four stop signs," neighbor Anna Agathangelou said.
The woman was rushed to the hospital and her injuries are still unknown. Police say no charges have been filed on the driver.
The accident remains under investigation.
