Saturday Marks One Year Since Bella Bond Was Found On Deer Island

WINTHROP (CBS) – Massachusetts marks a sad milestone on Saturday – the one-year anniversary of the day Bella Bond's body was found on Deer Island.

The 2-year-old was found by a dog walker on the beach on June 25, 2015, her body stuffed in a plastic trash bag. She was known for months as "Baby Doe" until her identity could be verified.

Michael McCarthy is charged with killing Bella Bond and is being held without bail. Rachelle Bond, Bella's mother and McCarthy's girlfriend, is accused of helping him conceal her body.

Massachusetts State Police wrote in a Facebook post that they're asking residents to take a moment Saturday to reflect on an innocent child's death.

"Baby Bella's case has touched this department deeply," the agency said. "We are committed to seeing it through to the end, to a day when we will speak for this innocent child in a court of law and ensure that justice is served on her behalf. Bella will never be forgotten within the Massachusetts State Police and our partner agencies."
