Humpback Whale Washes Onto Duxbury Beach
DUXBURY (CBS) – Crews removed a dead humpback whale that washed onto Duxbury Beach Wednesday morning.
Around 10:30 a.m., a tractor was brought in to move the massive whale carcass.
The whale was dragged down the beach nearly a mile to a service road. A necropsy was completed, and the whale was buried.
Tony LaCasse of New England Aquarium said the female whale was "noticeably thin," though there were no signs that it had been hit by a boat.
Aquarium staff and volunteers dissected the whale, removing tons of blubber and tissue during the process.
The whale's stomach was largely empty of food.
LaCasse said the whale was likely born between December 2014 and February 2015 off the northeastern coat of the Dominican Republic.
