BBs, White Hat Among Evidence Found In Tsarnaev's Dorm Room

BOSTON (CBS) - At one point, the world only knew Dzhokhar Tsarnaev as "the suspect with the white hat." Late Tuesday, that white Polo baseball cap became evidence against the 21-year-old. It was one of the items recovered by the FBI from his UMass Dartmouth dorm room in Pinedale Hall.

Also in Dzhokhar's room, according to prosecutors, were leftover BBs and receipts for the purchase of a pellet gun from Dick's Sporting Goods. Previous witnesses have said they found that pellet gun abandoned at the scene of the firefight on Laurel Street in Watertown.

Jurors also saw new surveillance video of both Tsarnaev brothers at a Manchester, New Hampshire firing range just weeks before the marathon explosions. The pair spent about $170, renting two 9mm Glocks and buying ammunition. According to records, they spent about an hour practicing at the firing range with weapons similar, prosecutors say, to the one used to kill MIT officer Sean Collier and fight with police in Watertown.

On the sign-in cards, the brothers used their own names and address. Tamerlan's receipt is blank; everything that day was in Dzhokhar's name. Both men listed their skill level with handguns as "intermediate."

Also on Tuesday, prosecutors introduced testimony that the bullets used to kill officer Collier and the bullets fired at Watertown police later that night all match each other -- and they all come from the same gun, the 9mm Ruger that was lent to Dzhokhar Tsarnaev by his childhood friend Stephen Silva.

That gun and dozens of shell casings were found at the scene on Laurel street; there were still more casings found around the body of officer Collier. Even bullets retrieved from Collier's skull during his autopsy were tested; they also matched the other.

The brothers' fingerprints were also found on some unused bullets found in Watertown as well as on the ammunition box the contained them, and on an ammunition magazine from the Ruger.

On his second day of testimony, terrorism scholar Dr. Matthew Levitt showed jurors once more how Tsarnaev's boat notes - written in pencil and carved into wood while he was in hiding - are based on pro-jihadi teachings of radical Islamic thinkers.

Tsarnaev defense attorney David Bruck tried to get Levitt to admit that Dzhokhar's big brother Tamerlan was really the one who got radicalized and forced all the violent content on his little brother, ultimately dragging Dzhokhar along.

But Levitt testified that it was ultimately up to Dzhokhar to decide to take part in the marathon bombings.
