Man Arrested For Attacking Bus Driver In Randolph; 16 Injured In Crash
RANDOLPH (CBS) – A bus crashed in Randolph after the driver was attacked by a passenger Monday night.
There were 30 people on the Brockton Area Transit Authority bus when it crashed into a car and then a utility pole on North Main Street. Sixteen people were taken to the hospital including the driver and passenger of the car that was hit by the bus.
Police say the suspect, 24-year-old Matthew Young of Boston, punched the driver after he did not make an extra stop.
"When the bus driver got off his head was split open," a woman who lives across the street told WBZ. "They were scared, he started attacking the bus driver and the bus driver just lost control and when he hit the pole everybody just slid to the front, like propelled to the front of the bus."
The bus driver, a 48-year-old Brockton man, was among the injured, along with a 10-year-old Randolph boy who was riding the bus at the time of the crash.
The passengers were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. One female passenger suffered severe shoulder injuries, according to police.
"This attack on the driver made for a very dangerous situation for riders on the bus and anyone traveling in the immediate area," Randolph Police Chief William Pace said. "Officers on scene were able to take the suspect into custody quickly."
Young was charged with assault and battery resulting in serious bodily injury, and wrongful interference of a vehicle carrying passengers for hire. He will be arraigned Tuesday morning at Quincy District Court.
