Baker To Press Case For Snow Disaster Relief
BOSTON (AP) — Gov. Charlie Baker is headed to Washington to press the state's case for disaster relief after the record-setting winter snowfall.
Baker is scheduled to meet Monday with Beth Zimmerman, associate administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and later with Vice President Joe Biden at the White House.
In his request for federal aid, the governor took the unusual step of asking President Barack Obama to treat the series of storms that pummeled Massachusetts in January and February as a single, continuous event.
Baker is asking for a disaster declaration for 10 counties, excluding the state's four westernmost counties.
If the request is granted, Massachusetts could receive up to 75 percent reimbursement for the estimated $400 million in snow removal and other costs.
