Cyclist Critically Hurt In Back Bay Hit-And-Run

BOSTON (CBS) -- A bicyclist is in critical condition after being struck in the Back Bay early Sunday morning.

The collision happened around 3:30 a.m. at Commonwealth Avenue and Clarendon Street.

Boston Police Commissioner Bill Evans said two cyclists were riding eastbound together when a car clipped one of them. They were not using the bike lane at that time.

He said the victim was a man in his 30s, and that he was very seriously hurt.

"Right now he's in tough shape," Evans said. "Hopefully he pulls through."

Police are looking for a four-door silver or gray sedan that they believe hit the cyclist. Evans said the car sped off and took a wrong-way turn down Berkeley Street.

"We need everyone's help to step up," Evans said. "Obviously this four-door silver vehicle is going to have some grill damage in the front from the impact."

The vehicle is also believed to have damage on the roof near the windshield on the driver's side.

Witnesses told police the car was speeding.

A red mini-cooper was also damaged in the hit-and-run and was towed from the scene later Sunday.

Officials are reviewing surveillance video as a part of their investigation.
