Police: Suspect Threw Gun At Troopers After High-Speed Chase, Crash

MARLBORO (CBS) – A police pursuit ended in a crash in Marlboro late Tuesday afternoon.

Police say they were investigating a suspicious man with ammunition in his car and before they could arrest him, he led officers on a high-speed chase.

Officers say it started on Route 12 in Auburn and came to an end in Marlboro when the suspect crashed.

Police say they first tried to arrest the suspect, 33-year-old Marqus Mitchell of Peabody, behind a motel in Auburn.

Police say Mitchell was acting suspiciously in Auburn and officers say they found cocaine and a firearm magazine in his car.

"The officers attempted to take Mitchell into custody but he resisted violently," Auburn Police said. "A Taser was used twice in an attempt to subdue Mitchell and take him into custody, but had little effect."

Mitchell was able to get back in his car and sped away on the Mass. Pike and Route 495.

He eventually crashed on the exit ramp near Route 20 in Marlboro.

"The suspect emerged from the vehicle, and threw the firearm at the troopers," said Detective Sgt. Scott Mills of the Auburn Police.

"The troopers exercised great restraint by not firing on him, by not shooting him, and our officers were there shortly thereafter and with the assistance of other officers and troopers they were able to take the suspect into custody."

Mitchell is expected in court Wednesday morning. Police say no one was hurt in the incident.
