At Least 5 Gunshots Fired At Driver In Canton
CANTON (CBS) -- Three men are facing charges of armed assault with intent to murder after police say they fired several shots at another car early Sunday morning.
No one was injured in the shooting, Canton police said.
A caller told 911 that he was driving onto Route 138 south from Route 128 north at about 4:30 a.m. when another vehicle pulled up next to his and shots rang out. There was more gunfire as the vehicles continued on Washington Street, police said.
The victim's car was shot at least five times, police said.
"We're lucky we're not standing here talking about a murder," Canton Police Chief Keith Berkowitz said.
Mansfield police pulled over the suspects' vehicle on Route 106.
Police arrested 27-year-old Yancy Williams, of Boston; 35-year-old Louis Whitehead, of Boston; and 37-year-old Arthur Williams, of Randolph, and say they all have lengthy criminal records.
The victim does not know what provoked the attack, Berkowitz said. He said it appears to be a random shooting.
"We asked the victim, who was driving, several times," he said. "As far as he knows there was no altercation whatsoever."
They are all facing armed assault with intent to murder and several firearm charges.
Canton and Mansfield police are continuing to search for evidence, including the weapon used.
