Ask A Boston Bar Manager: Favorite Local Summer Beers (Olde Magoun's Saloon Edition)

In case you missed last week's installment, CBS Boston has been reaching out to the people responsible for picking the beer that shows up at some of your favorite local watering holes - the stuff you actually drink.

For round two of 'Ask A Boston Bar Manager: Favorite Summer Beers,' we tapped Olde Magoun's Saloon owner Greg Coughlin, who's responsible for the restaurant's generally awesome rotating selection of brews. Coughlin is keeping it local with the following picks.

White Birch Brewing - NH: Berliner Weisse 5.5% ABV

We look forward to June each year when this beer comes out. This sour German wheat beer is brewed with Lactobacillus which gives it a refreshing sour lemon note that's nicely balanced by a fresh wheat finish. This beer has summertime written all over it.

Notch Brewing - MA: Left of the Dial IPA 4.3% ABV

Session IPAs are all the rage this summer and Notch has proven they know what they are doing when it comes to session beers. This IPA dials down the ABV but cranks up the flavor enough to satisfy any hophead. The great thing about this beer is that it maintains a good malt flavor, something that is often missing in other session IPAs.

Mayflower Brewing Co. - MA: Saison 6.5% ABV

This Belgian-style farmhouse ale has a nice rustic grain flavor highlighted by citrus and pepper notes from the yeast and a dry finish and mild hop bitterness. A great refreshing beer for the hot days to come. It's draft-only for now so enjoy it while you can.

Rising Tide Brewing Co. - ME: Spinnaker Hefeweizen 4.5% ABV

We love our German beers and we're always glad to see good local versions of German styles. Rising Tide hit the nail on the head with this one, brewing one of the best traditional Hefeweizens in New England. Nice banana sweetness, slight clove finish with a solid wheatiness that stays drinkable and refreshing. Enjoy it like the Germans do and skip the lemon slice.

Jack's Abby Brewing - MA: Jabby Brau 4.5% ABV

Lagers don't always get all the hype, but when the temperature is nearing triple digits nothing tastes better than a crisp lager. Jack's Abby brews some of the best lagers in the country and Jabby Brau is their unique take on a classic German lager by using German malts and American hops. Zesty notes of lemon with a clean, fresh malt finish make this a great backyard beer for the summer.
