Several Arrests Made At Pre-St. Patrick's Day 'Blarney Blowout'
AMHERST (CBS) -- Several arrests were made during the pre-St. Patrick's Day "Blarney Blowout" parties on-and-off campus at UMass Amherst on Saturday.
Amherst Police say they had officers in multiple locations within the community to try and maintain safety while the festivities were underway.
They made seven arrests and issued 10 summonses, while UMass Police reported no arrests.
At a free concert for UMass students at the Mullins Center, Amherst Fire and UMass Emergency Medical Services treated three people and one was taken to Cooley Dickinson Hospital to be treated for intoxication, according to a statement released Saturday. Amherst firefighters also tended to three drunk individuals, police said.
The concert drew a crowd of more than 3,200, officials say.
In a statement, Amherst Town Manager Pete Hechenbleikner said several groups came together to help make the day safer than it had been in the past.
Amherst and campus police, fire officials, university staff and students, and business and property owners all played a role in the preparation for the blowout.
Police say 19 students were treated at the Mullins Center, and the Amherst and UMass Police reported a total of six arrests last year.
