Arrest Made In Deadly Lowell Hit & Run Crash

LOWELL (CBS) - Police have arrested the driver they say left the scene of a deadly crash involving a pedestrian last week.

Officials say on June 4, 86-year-old Elmer Mortensen was walking with a cane when he was hit while crossing Westford Street just before 11 p.m.

Police say the driver, Hector Caustrita, 21,stopped, got out of his car to see Mortensen, who was bleeding from the head, but then drove off.

Officers later found a blue 2003 Volkswagen GTI registered in Caustrita's name at an apartment complex about three miles from the crash scene.

Detectives say the car's windshield has significant damage.

Caustrita's arraignment is scheduled for Thursday afternoon in Lowell District Court.
