Senator John McCain Dies Surrounded By His Family

SEDONA, Arizona (CBS) - Senator John McCain died on Saturday, surrounded by his family. He was 81.

His family issued a statement, saying that McCain was with this wife and loved ones when he passed away at his home at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

He had been battling brain cancer at the time of his death.

"At his death, he had served the United States of America faithfully for sixty years," the family's statement said.

His wife, Cindy McCain, tweeted Saturday night that her "heart is broken."

President Donald Trump tweeted his condolences after McCain's passing on Saturday.

"My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain. Our hearts and prayers are with you!" Trump tweeted.

Tributes to the late senator poured out on social media after his passing.

Former president Jimmy Carter said: "John McCain was a man of honor, a true patriot in the best sense of the word. Americans will be forever grateful for his heroic military service and for his steadfast integrity as a member of the United States Senate."

Earlier Saturday, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker praised McCain as a "quintessential American" after the Arizona senator's family announced Friday that he would forego further treatment for an aggressive form of brain cancer.
