Amtrak Allows Pets On Select Northeast Trains
BOSTON (CBS) – Passengers aboard select Amtrak trains leaving Boston and other cities in the northeast will now be able to travel with their pets as a part of a pilot program.
Amtrak announced this week that beginning on Monday, riders can bring small pets on trains from several trains on the Northeast Regional service, and others between Boston and Brunswick, Maine, on the Downeaster route.
The pet policy was launched recently in Illinois, and Amtrak opted to bring the pilot program to the Northeast Corridor and New England.
"We have listened to our passengers looking for other transportation options while traveling with their pets," Amtrak President and CEO Joe Boardman. "We are pleased to bring this pilot program to the region."
Under the new policy, riders can bring one cat or one small dog in an enclosed carrier on trips up to seven hours long.
The carrier and pet cannot weigh any more than 20 pounds and must be placed under the owner's seat. In addition, the pets must be at least eight weeks old and updated on their vaccinations.
Advance registration will be required to bring pets on board, and it will cost $25.
