All Things Travel: Record Month For Sports Dollars In Boston

BOSTON (CBS) – April will be a record month for the economic impact of sports dollars and marketing generated in Boston, as the total will be more than $250 million.

Checking around town, it is hard to get an actual dollar figure that will be spent in the city from the Frozen Four college hockey tournament, the Boston Marathon, 10 Boston Red Sox home games and two Boston Celtics playoff games at the end of the month.

According to the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau that complies the figures, they do not include ticket revenue for the sports teams.

The marathon leads the way with more than $180 million in economic impact to the region. That includes $102 million for the 30,000 runners and their guests. An additional $15 million is spent on sponsorship and media-related events.

According to the CVB, $25 million will go into the economy through charity fundraising from runners at the marathon.

The Frozen Four brought in more than $17 million to the city.

More than 1,200 members of the media are in Boston for marathon weekend. Race headquarters are at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel.

Logan Airport will experience one of its busiest weekends of the year. It is school vacation week in Massachusetts starting Monday.

The airport will welcome about 5,000 runners from 86 countries outside of the United States.

Even though hundreds of runners will be leaving Boston on Monday to return home, the Logan Back Bay Express will not run on Monday.

Pick-up points along Boylston Street will be closed to traffic. No alternate route was selected to handle people wanting to get the non-stop bus back to the airport.

Old Town Trolley and the Red Sox have ended their exclusive official tour partnership at Fenway Park that began in 2007.

According to the team, about 240,000 people visit the park annually from all sources of transportation.
