Red Sox Acquire Reliever Addison Reed From Mets
BOSTON (CBS) -- The Red Sox have bolstered their bullpen just ahead of the 2017 MLB trade deadline.
Boston acquired right-handed reliever Addison Reed from the Mets on Monday, president of baseball ops. Dave Dombrowski announced just about an hour until the 4 p.m. deadline.
In return, the Red Sox send minor league right-handed pitchers Jamie Callahan, Gerson Bautista, and Steve Nogosek to the Mets. To make room for Reed on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox transferred infielder Josh Rutledge to the 60-day disabled list.
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal was first to tweet on early Monday that Reed was headed to the Red Sox for "three prospects," pending a physical.
According to Rosenthal, the Red Sox will take on the remainder of Reed's salary owed to him from the Mets, which is about $2.6 million. Reed is on track to become a free agent after the season.
Reed had been dominant since being traded to the Mets during the 2015 season. He's posted a 2.09 ERA while striking out 156 batters in 142 innings with the Mets, most recently recording 19 saves with a 2.57 ERA in 2017.
Reed was at his most dominant in 2016 when he served as the Mets' eighth-inning setup man, which is likely the role he will assume with the Red Sox behind closer Craig Kimbrel. Last season, he posted a 1.97 ERA with 91 strikeouts in 77.2 innings.
