3 Observations From Day 2 Of Patriots Training Camp

BOSTON (CBS) -- Training camp is in full swing down at Gillette Stadium, with the New England Patriots hitting the field for their second practice on Friday.

Things will really ramp up on Saturday when the players get to put on pads for the first time, but Friday was full of newsworthy notes. WBZ-TV's Dan Roche and Levan Reid bring you closer to Patriots Training Camp with three observations from Friday's session:

1. A Few Injury Notes

Julian Edelman took a spill while running a route, but says he is good to go.

Linebacker Jerod Mayo, on the mend from a torn patella tendon he suffered in the middle of last season, briefly spoke to the media and said he's doing what the Patriots always do.

"I'm just taking it one day at a time trying to get better each and every day," said the linebacker. "[I'm doing] whatever the coaches and trainers allow me to do."

It's good to see Mayo on the field though, after his last two seasons have been cut short by injury.

2. Quarterbacks Not As Sharp

For some reason, there is always a drop from Day 1 to Day 2, and Friday was no exception. That goes for the quarterbacks too, even though they can't get hit.

Tom Brady struggled early but finished strong. Jimmy Garoppolo also had his share of issues on Friday, but Roche notes that the second-year passer put in some extra work with wide receiver Brian Tyms after practice.

3. Belichick Still Teaching

Bill Belichick just loves football, and he loves teaching the game. That was on display when he stopped a play and had a lengthy chat with newly signed cornerback Tarell Brown.

"We've always said this, he's a good teacher. The players have always said he likes to teach the game, and that's what he's doing now with some of the new players here," said Reid.

The Boston Herald's Jeff Howe joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's Zolak & Bertrand on Friday to pass along his observations from Day 2 as well. Listen below:
